Professor (Dr.) Sheikh Shafiullah - Eminent Professor of Professors, who produced 25 Ph.D. doctorate students in organic chemistry and has been enormous source to make notable academicians, scientist and brought noble human being across the Globe.

Prof (Dr) Sheikh Shafiullah born on 06th Nov 1941 and died on 07th May-2017. His funeral took place in Dammam -KSA.

Ex -Chairman, Department of Chemistry , AMU -Aligarh . An eminent scientist and well known academician .

• Dr.Sheikh Shafiullah was born in Varanasi which is known as an religious heritage city of UP- India on 06th November 1941 . He completed his senior secondary school from his native city with distinction and gold medal in the academic year 1962.

• He obtained his B.SC & M.SC in organic chemistry from one of the prestigious institution of India, Aligarh Muslim University –Aligarh with flying colors in year 1964 and 1966 respectively and stand first position in his class.

•He stand first with gold medal in M.SC and joined as an Assistant professor in the department of Chemistry , AMU Aligarh in the year 1969 . He has been awarded his Ph.D. in the university convocation of 1970


Dr. Shafiullah taking M.Sc class in 1973 in Aligarh Muslim university. He was an exemplary professor.



• He served department of chemistry , AMU Aligarh in the capacity of Chairman , Professor , reader & lecturer lasted 35 years till 2003.

• It is worth to mention that Dr. Shafiullah research papers has been cited by one of Nobel laureate Dr. D.H.R .Barton – USA . Dr. Shafiullah has been the fellow of BARC ( Bhava Atomic research Centre – Trombay ) from the B.Sc. first year . He was selected as junior scientist and completed his education with the fellow ship of Bhava until the completion of M.SC .

• Professor ( Dr.) Sheikh Shafiullah is one of the eminent professor of organic chemistry . He served as a professor & chairman in the dept.of Chemistry of prestigious Aligarh Muslim university for more than 35 years . He has been the author of six text Books and monograph and published more than 150 research papers in journal of national & international reputes . He has also produced 25 Ph.D. scholars and attended many national & international conferences during his tenure .He shall be remembered always to promote financially weak students and as a result many students achieved their dream with the consistent help of Dr. Shafiullah sahib .

• Dr.Shafiullah has produced 25 Ph.D. students ,who have acquired highly respectable position in pharmaceutic , chemical and petrochemical industry apart from academician in reputed organization.

• Dr. Shafiullah completed his Ph.D. under Professor M.S .Ahmed , an wizard of chemistry and notable scientist of south east Asia and father of Indian hockey skipper Mr. Zafar Iqbal . Dr.M.S Ahmed was his mentor , guide and fatherly figure to him.

Personal Life :

• Professor Dr.Shafiullah born in Banaras on 06th Nov-1941. His father Late Sheikh Azimullah was an freedom fighter and business man died in the demonstration against British rule in 1946 . His grand father left his police officer job to participate in the freedom movement under the leadership of father of nation , Mahatam Karam Chand Ghandhi . After the death of his father in freedom movement in a very early age , 

He & his younger brother Dr.Nasirullah , Nizamullah and elder sister Zaitun nisa was brought up under by his his mother Madam Late Ibrunisha , an brave lady , who motivated him to adopt higher education in such an critical time .His younger brother Dr. Nasirullah is retired as an Deputy director of CFTRI -Mysore .

• Dr.Shafiullah is survived with his wife Mrs.Mushtar jahan and has one daughter Dr.Sheeba shafi , who is an Ph.D in Chemistry and notable academician along with his son- in law , Dr.Ehtesham H.Khan working as an head of the department in petrochemical complex in abroad last two decades .

1. A Research project (CST-SERPD-219-Chemi-3-88) entitled “Synthesis of Heterosteroids” was granted financial support from the Council of Science and Technology, U.P. Govt. The Project is now completed.

2. A Research prject entitled “Synthesis and Screening of Heterosteroids” for mutagenic and carcinogenic activity was approved by Indian Council of Medical Research under my supervision and Dr. Ishrat Husain Siddiqui was awarded Research Associateship. Dr. Masood Ahmad, Reader, Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Science is Co-supervior of this research project.

Professor Dr.Shafiullah is honoring poetic event in Jubail in Year -2014.

§ During the past 24 years a number of original research papers as evidenced by the list of publications concerning the synthesis of new steroidal compounds characterized by UV, IR 1H-NMR, Mass ORD and CD of Potential medicinal value are published in reputed National and International Journals.

§ The paper entitled “Attempted acid catalyzed hydrolysis of 6-aza-3*, 5-cyclo-5*-‘cholestan-7-ones: ‘Evidence for ‘”Retro “Beckmann rearrangement”, (Tetrahedron letters 2739 (1970) carries a novel observation of Retro Beckmann Rearrangement. The only example of its kind in literature.
